sock hop, by all-time quarterback

Super, super music by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie. If you like their stuff you should listen to this for sure. But it is rather different. I think I'll put some other All-Time Quarterback stuff here fairly soon because I ell you vee it.

the city has sex, by bright eyes

This is a little more upbeat than some other Bright Eyes songs. I don't mean upbeat in content, and I don't mean to say it has any pop in it. But it's a little more fast-paced. Short and sweet. If you've never heard them before this isn't the most accurate example of their sound but it's still a really good song.

pull my hair, by bright eyes

This song is just so goddamned sexy.

making time, by the creation

The pissed-off British invasion. If you've seen Rushmore, this is the song they play in the beginning where they're showing all the clubs Max is in.

harder, better, faster, stronger, by daft punk

My mom heard this song and went, "Hey, that's disco!" And I guess it is, really. This is the kind of song that will make you move, which is a nice break from irony, even I'll admit. I'm sure some people will say it's not as good as Daft Punk's older stuff--and it isn't, but since I'm no purist when it comes to electronic music, I really don't mind.

photobooth, by death cab for cutie

Mellow. Listen to this while falling asleep, driving at night, thinking, being sad, being tired, relaxing, hugging. Or any activity that involves your significant other. But only if you love them very much.

crown of the valley, by jets to brazil

This is a fairly catchy song, but not in a way that's overt or irritating. The guitars are really great. They remind me of the kind you hear in, for example, a song like "American Woman" (not the Lenny Kravitz version, dumbass), or something of that era. This is one of the songs on this list that I think everyone should hear at least once. Odds are you'll like it.

mumblechip, by look what you did

Indie kids out of Toronto, but it's not just indie. This copy is sort of lousy quality but catchy and pleasant.

kite flying society (from the rushmore soundtrack), by mark mothersbaugh

This song sounds like kites. It will make you like harps. Mark Mothersbaugh, in case you didn't know, is the guy from Devo who now does movie soundtracks which sound nothing like Devo. If you've seen any Wes Anderson movies (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums), you've heard Mark Mothersbaugh. He also did the Rugrats theme song. Not that this sounds anything like that.

everywhere in denver, by the promise ring

I can psyche myself up in a really quiet way with this song. I love the Promise Ring (R.I.P.) and this is one of my favorites of theirs. They just broke up recently, and I assume it's at least partially related their latest album, which has a really different sound from their older stuff. Fans don't like change. Anyway, this is pretty representative of what they sounded like before that album, Wood/Water, which isn't even bad, by the way. Just, you know, different.

what gives you butterflies, by sorry about dresden

This is a nice song, I think. The band is currently touring with Bright Eyes, but they sound a little more like the Ataris, except less sucky. (I only like one song by the Ataris, My Hotel Year, which maybe I will add. I don't know.) Anyway, the song is good. Give it a chance.

the real folk blues (cowboy bebop end theme), by swek

Did you know there was such a thing as an anime cover band?

kyle quit the band, by tenacious d

I can relate to this song because I, too, only came to kick some ass. It's really sweet in a way. The thing is... Tenacious D is hilarious and everything, but they're also really good musicians. Their guitars are old school awesome. So even if you've just heard "Tribute" on the radio or something and you think they're dumb, download this song anyway and enjoy the rockin. Cause I said so.

my name is jonas, by weezer

We have this weird relationship with Weezer, because we know they suck now, and they're jerks, and they don't care about us, but... but... Rivers. Rivers Cuomo will always personify emo. Not in attitude, but in aura. He doesn't just have the look, he is the look. And in any case, the Blue Album is wonderful. No matter what your politics, chances are you love this song, or will love it. And if you hate it, I bet someday you'll grow to have a grudging respect for it. It's just good.

mystery girl, by the yeah yeah yeahs

The YYY rock my world. This is a great song; the drums in particular are really cool. Fun fact: incidentally, this is the only band with a female lead that I really listen to. What a sexist I am.

blinuet, by zoot sims

Old-timey swing/jazz. Neat horns.
